UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities and exclusion, and build resilience so countries can sustain progress. As the UN’s development agency, UNDP plays a critical role in helping countries achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
Agenda Item: ” Fostering Resilience in the Face of an Increasing Incidence of Natural Disasters “
Summary of the Item
According to the World Meteorological Organization, natural disasters have increased in frequency by a factor of 5 over the past 50 years, the cause of which is attributed to climate change. These disasters have major effects on afflicted nations, resulting in loss of life and significantly damaging infrastructure and the economy. Moreover, such disasters displace an average of 14 million people annually. The road towards effectively tackling climate change is lengthy, which drives the narrative towards learning how to cope with such events given they will remain occurring at the same (if not increased) frequency. Delegates should develop strategies to foster resiliency through effective risk-management, prevention, response, and recovery frameworks.
